Recognition Statement

Out of respect for the Indigenous peoples of Manitoba, FRCDN recognizes we are on Treaty 1 land, the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, known as the First Nations Territory, as well as the Homeland of the Metis Nation. FRCDN supports community by continuing to build relationships based on mutual recognition, respect, and shared responsibility for maintaining relationships into the future.

To celebrate the diversity of our community, FRCDN incorporates cultural components into our curriculum that reflect the children in our programs to ensure the children are being provided positive experiences and opportunities to share their cultures and to learn about the cultures of others.

Behaviour Management Policy

At FRCDN we strive to create a nurturing environment that supports children’s emotional, social, and cognitive development. Our approach to behavior management is rooted in the principles of the Circle of Security (COS), which emphasizes the importance of secure attachment, emotional regulation, and positive social interactions.

Guiding Principles:

  1. Safe Base: We offer children a secure base from which they can confidently explore and return for comfort when needed.
  2. Supportive Presence: We provide a responsive, empathetic presence, understanding that challenging behavior often arises from unmet emotional needs.
  3. Boundaries and Limits: We set clear, consistent boundaries while teaching children how to manage their emotions and express their needs in a respectful way.
  4. Emotional Regulation: We assist children in identifying and managing their emotions through reflection, support, and guidance.

Behavioral Expectations:

  • Treat others with kindness and respect.
  • Express emotions appropriately and seek support when feeling overwhelmed.
  • Follow directions and participate in group activities.

Approach to Behavior Management:

  • Prevention: We create a structured environment with clear routines, positive reinforcement, and opportunities for children to explore safely.
  • Response: When challenging behavior occurs, we approach it with empathy, validating the child’s feelings, and offering gentle redirection and guidance.
  • Support: We use the Circle of Security framework to be responsive to each child’s emotional needs and support them in learning new skills.

Staff Training and Development:

All staff will receive ongoing training through professional development to ensure a consistent and nurturing approach to behavior management.

Review:
This policy will be reviewed annually and updated as necessary based on feedback and the evolving needs of the children in our care.

Illness

Children should remain in the comfort of family and friends if they are too ill to participate in all aspects of the program.  If the child is unable to participate in the daily routine, including outdoor play, then they are not well enough to attend childcare. The child is required to be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to childcare.

If a child becomes ill during the day, or if their illness is such that they display lethargic or erratic behaviour, we feel that it is in the child’s best interest for the parent to be contacted so that alternate arrangements can be made for the care of their child.

We ask that you call the childcare centre if your child will be away due to illness.

In the case of a communicable disease, after receiving confirmation from your family doctor, notify the centre so an email can be sent to inform other families.

Parents are requested to keep their children at home for 24 hours following the onset of illness to ensure they are returning to childcare in good health.

  • Colds/Elevated Temperature: if your child develops a fever during childcare hours, we will contact the parent or guardian to pick up the child.
  • Diarrhea: if your child has diarrhea, please do not bring him/her to childcare. If your child has two incidents of watery stools during their day, you will be contacted and asked to pick your child up.
  • Ear Infection:  after a child has been seen by a physician and has been on medication for twenty-four hours, he/she may return to childcare.
  • Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis): children with this condition must be excluded from the childcare centre for at least twenty-four hours after being prescribed treatment.
  • Skin Rash:  diagnosis by a physician is required.
  • Vomiting: please do not bring your child to childcare if he/she has vomited during the night or upon awakening in the morning. If your child has a vomiting episode during childcare hours, parent/guardian will be contacted to pick him/her up.
  • Strep Throat: children with this illness must be excluded from contact with other children until he/she has been on antibiotics for at least twenty-four hours as the spread of this disease is airborne from person to person.

Should your child require a pick-up, the staff at the childcare centre will keep your child comfortable until you are able to arrive.

Administration of Medication

Medication will be administered by a staff provided that the proper “Medication Release Form” is filled out and signed by the parent (forms available through staff).  The medicine must be in its original container as obtained from the pharmacy indicating the type of medication, dosage, and doctor’s information.

Please ensure that any and all medication is HANDED DIRECTLY TO A STAFF MEMBER and not left in the child’s bag.

Research, Photography, Videotaping Policies

Every licensee shall obtain written permission from the parent/guardian of a child before any Research Project, photography, or videotaping is carried out by any person with respect to that child in the Licensee’s Center.
